Using gesture and dance, with minimal dialogue, “Spear” follows a young Aboriginal man named Djali (Hunter Page-Lochard) from North East Arnhem Land to the streets of Sydney on his quest to understand what it means to be a man with ancient traditions in a modern world. “A foot in each world, a heart in none.” Featuring the brilliant Bangarra dancers and an evocative David Page score that combines traditional and contemporary music, “Spear” is an intimate journey with one of Australia’’s most celebrated artists, and one of the most affecting and spiritually resonant films of the year.

Page first produced “Spear” theatrically in 2000, and the story is based very closely on his own experiences as a young Aboriginal man. For his son to take up the role in the film version is a natural progression.

Made for just one million dollars, “Spear” is Page’s first feature film after more than two decades as a theatrical director and community leader. Previously, his choreography was featured in “The Sapphires” and “Bran Nue Dae”.

“Spear” is a poignant, visceral and above all hopeful film experience – a must-see.
