WHAT WE DO

Beamafilm is committed to bringing quality documentaries to 'thinking' digital audiences around the world.

We have a focus on Australian stories as well as exploring new paradigms of engagement with consumer and education markets.

Powered by state of the art video streaming and payment technologies the Beamafilm network provides easy online access, high level security and adaptive bitrate. We handle digitising, hosting, distribution, marketing and advertising around your film and then share the revenues generously with rightsholders.

Be amazed! Keep an eye on this page for new ways to watch Beamafilm.

We invite you to discover something new or re-discover something old. Our growing collection is designed to change the way you see the world. You will notice Beamafilm is mostly about documentaries. We love this genre. Our philosophy is different. We are specialists: we are niche, independent and different. Over 60 % of our documentaries and selected feature films are independently made by Australians - many of which are only available online with Beamafilm. We love films that tell it like it is and some that make us suspend our disbelief.

If it’s the latest doco you want, Beamafilm has the best. Our partnerships with a diverse range of distributors has given us films like FOOD CHAINS, KEDI, JUNGLE and A FLICKERING TRUTH – all prize-winners and favourites from their cinema releases. Or there’s Academy-Award Winners, THE KILLING FIELDS or 2012 Walkley Award Winner, THEN THE WIND CHANGED. You might have missed them at the cinema or on TV. You might want to see them again. You might know the filmmakers or you might even be in one of our films. You might study film and TV or you might, like Beamafilm’s creators, just love independent film at its best.

You will notice some of our films, like THE DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND, THE SHIRALEE, THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH, AUSTRALIA DAZE or FANTASTIC PLANET, were produced more than 15 years ago - but age does not weary them nor the years condemn: if you want to know Australia and its people, films like these reveal the abiding truths. Only by seeing these documentary classics can we really know how things have changed.

WHO ARE WE

Louise van Rooyen – Managing Director

Louise van Rooyen began her career conducting fieldwork on Polynesian ritual, ceremony and daily life with noted New Zealand photographer Glenn Jowitt. She also worked extensively creating interactive learning and immersion experiences for science museums in the USA before transitioning into the world of digital Edutainment CD-ROM and web production in the early 1990’s. Louise brings over 20 years experience in digital media to her role at Beamafilm. She is a Co-founder of leading digital studio Massive Interactive Inc. where she worked as MD of their interactive studio during the heady dot-com boom. She has also held roles as CEO at AIMIA (Australia’s peak body for digital media) and head of Asia Pacific for in-game ad pioneer Massive Incorporated (MSFT). Through her digital consulting company, PPi established in 2001, she extended her passion for unified engagement across the various digital screens spanning internet and mobile devices, video game and iPTV. In 2007 Louise has a Masters Degree in Anthropology and was featured on BRW's 40 Biggest Players of the Australian Digital Age.

Gil Scrine – Director of Acquisition

Gil Scrine brings a wealth of expertise in film distribution to his role as Director of Acquisitions for Beamafilm. As a noted distributor of art house documentaries and features, Gil has forged many long-lasting relationships within the exhibition community since 1992. Known for its discerning collection of independent producer/director documentaries, Gil Scrine Films relaunched as Antidote Films along with its inclusion of many more DVD releases in 2010. Gil is also the pioneer of a new distribution philosophy known as "Community Targeted Distribution" which explores the potential for social change through the box office. Cinema Ventures links not-for-profit distribution opportunities with audiences that form around the core issues within each documentary. Gil is also an award-winning filmmaker in his own right and in 1990 was awarded the ABC/AFC Documentary Fellowship.

"Beamafilm involves experienced players who have demonstrated a commitment to building audiences for Australian screen content outside the mainstream".
