A short film examining the life-changing power of art has taken home the Best Documentary prize at the South Australian Screen Awards 2012. ‘Ball Of Light’ features the story of Denis Smith; a Kiwi salesman who suffered from alcoholism, debt problems and depression until he moved to Adelaide and discovered light painting, a unique form of surreal photography. The 15 minute film, written and produced by Sam Collins, is both an uplifting story of personal transformation as well as an in-depth examination of a powerfully expressive photographic technique. In creating the ‘Ball Of Light’, Denis augments traditional landscape images with mystical portals bursting with otherworldly colours and energy. Imagination and wonder lie at the heart of his work – there is no use of Photoshop or editing software.
